Vidal Blanc

May 27, 2016 by Corey Ameele

2016 Vidal Blanc

We produce this delicious aromatic white wine from the same grape variety as our famous Fiori Vidal Blanc Ice Wine.

Viticulture

Grapes: 100% Vidal Blanc

Appellation: Finger Lakes

Harvest date(s): Oct. 26, 2016

Viticulture notes: Vidal Blanc is a rare white French-American wine grape developed by Jean Louis Vidal in France in the 1930s. It is winter-hardy, with thick skins that resist frosts. We trellis it high above the ground and train it in a downward, umbrella-like growth pattern. It can hang late into the season and is often the last grape picked during harvest. It produces moderate sugar, plentiful natural acidity and a range of possible fruit flavors depending on the vintage, from pineapple and grapefruit to peach.

Winemaking

Winemaker: Matt Cassavaugh

Fermentation: Stainless steel at low temperature

Vintage: 2016

Alcohol by volume: 11.5%

Residual sugar: 1.1%

IRF scale: Medium Dry

Aging: Stainless steel

Acidity: pH 3.0, TA 8.1 g/L

Bottle volume: 750ml

Bottling date: February 1, 2017

Production: 191 cases

Wine series: Classic

Vegan: Yes

TTBID: 16338-001-000077

UPC: 0-89800-00934-5

Year first produced: 1988

Winemaking notes: Slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks lasts into the early winter. The wine is then aged on light lees to encourage body and roundness. Bottling occurs while the wine is young to maintain and emphasize the tropical aromas unique to the variety.

Enjoying our Vidal Blanc

Availability: At our winery in Fairport; at selected wine and spirits stores and restaurants in New York State; at CasaLarga.com for direct shipment to residences and workplaces in 37 states.

Accolades:

  • 2016 Vintage results to be determined.

  • 2014 Vintage: 91 Points, Gold Medal, Best Buy, 2015 Beverage Testing Institute World Wine Challenge (tastings.com)
  • 2013 Vintage: Gold Medal, 2014 Denver International Wine Competition

Gewürtztraminer

May 20, 2016 by Corey Ameele

Gewurztraminer2016 Gewürztraminer

Estate Grown and Bottled
Finger Lakes

Gewürztraminer was among the very first grapes planted by Andrew Colaruotolo at Casa Larga in 1974. This noble cool-climate grape originated in Alsace centuries ago. It is pink or light red in color, yet produces a beautiful aromatic white wine prized for its floral and spice notes. The grape actually shares an aroma compound with lychees. Gewürz means “spiced” or “perfumed” in German.

Winemaking notes. We use cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks to express the fruit and floral aromas and flavor of the wine. Unlike most white wines, we maintain Gewürztraminer juice in contact with its skins for several hours to extract the complex rose petal and lychee fruit aromas characteristic of the

variety. We rack the wine quickly after fermentation to prevent lees contact. We add to the wine just prior to bottling a small amount of juice (set aside while pressing) to enhance the body, aroma and balance of the wine.
